PURPOSE:To enable the detection of the maximum peak position in a short time, by judging that the maximum peak is generated when the next peak detection signal is not generated within a specified time after the generation of a peak detection signal. CONSTITUTION:A reference position generator 3 generates a reference position signal while a indicated pressure generation circuit 1 generates a indicated pressure signal indicating an internal pressure of a combustion chamber respectively. A peak holding circuit 4 holds the maximum value of the indicated pressure signal following the generation of the reference position signal and a comparator circuit 5 generates a peak detection signal when the indicated pressure signal is smaller than the peak voltage held in the circuit 4. On the other hand, first and second counters 6 and 12 which count a clock pulse train generated by a constant cycle clock generation circuit 2 are reset by the reference position signal and the peak detection signal respectively. A latch circuit 11 latches counts of the counter 6 according to the peak detection signal and is reset by the reference position signal. A decoder 13 issues a reading command signal when the counts of the counter 12 each a specified value and a current latched contents of the circuit 11 them are determined to be an indicated pressure peak position information.
