NEW MATERIAL:A benzothiazolone derivative expressed by formula I (R<1> is COR<3>, COOR<4> or SO2R<5>; R<2> is COR<6> or COOR<7>; R<3>-R<7> are 1-4C alkyl). EXAMPLE:3-Isobutyryl-5-acetoxybenzothiazolone. USE:An agricultural and horticultural germicide, having remarkable effect on late blight of tomato, blast of rice plant, anthracnose of cucumber, etc., and capable of further exhibiting powerful abntimicrobial action on plant pathogenic algal fungi, ascomycetes, basiodiomycetes, fungi imperfecti and even bacteria with slight phytotoxicity to plants. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula R<1>X<1> (X<1> is halogen) and the resultant compound is then reacted with a compound expressed by the formula R<2>X<2> (X<2> is halogen) to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I. Alternatively, the compound expressed by formula II is reacted with the compound expressed by the formula R<2>X<2> in an equivalent amount of >=2 based on the compound expressed by formula II to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
