A method of constructing an underwater tunnel for undercrossing waterways and the like, and an underwater tunnel constructed according to this method, consisting of at least one tunnel tube which can be used by vehicles and can be ventilated and is anchored on the bottom of the waterway. The tunnel tube is fabricated from a seamless plastic material produced by the extrusion method. The extruder is preferably installed or rigged up on a ship or at the laying site, the tunnel tube being directly lowered continuously into the water. The tunnel tube is a continuously extruded tube which is jetted into position on the bottom of the waterway, is placed on supports or runs exposed roughly parallel to the bottom. Appropriate stabilisers, foundation plates and the like are fastened to the outside of the tube.
