PURPOSE:To effectively prevent the explosion of a furnace top, by severally blowing an inert gas or steam into charging and receiving hoppers on a furnace body when respective gas concentrations in the hoppers approaches the explosion limits. CONSTITUTION:A measuring instrument 7 for measuring the concentration and temp. of gas is attached to the charging hopper 3 and the receiving hopper 5 provided onto the furnace body 1 of a vertical furnace for ferroalloy smelting. The measuring instrument 7 is connected to a controller and, when the measuring instrument 7 determines that gas concentration in the receiving hopper 5 has come close to the explosion limit, it transmits signals to the controller 12. Then the controller 12 performs an operation of opening valves 10, 11, so that inert gas or steam is blown from gas-blowing tubes 8, 9, respectively, into the charging hopper 3 and the receiving hopper 5.
