PURPOSE:To make it possible to form a diamond tool easily to a required shape by pressing the diamond tool to be ground against a grinding plate made by forming a thin nickel film on a glass substrate so that part of the substrate is exposed while moving the diamond tool relative to the grinding plate. CONSTITUTION:A grinding plate 12 is made by depositing nickel by evaporation on a mirror-surface-finished, donut-shaped glass plate 20 and by forming a fine spiral pattern on it by photo-etching. With the grinding plate 12 fixed on a rotary table 13 by means of a fitting screw 14, and rotating the grinding plate 12 while a diamond sword tool 22 is pressed against and along a fine pattern 11 with a load adjusted with a balancing weight 17, the diamond tool 22 is formed. By forming in this manner, a diamond tip 21 is ground with the thin nickel film with the glass plate 20 used as a stopper layer determining the grinding amount, making it possible to form the tip to a required shape easily and with high accuracy.
