PURPOSE:To easily produce the titled compound having high purity, by reacting a hydroxyl methacrylate with phosgene or a solution of phosgene generated from a phosgene-generation agent using a linear or cyclic alkyl ether as a solvent. CONSTITUTION:1pt. of a hydroxyl methacrylate of formula (R is 1-10C linear or branched alkylene which can be substituted with halogen) (e.g. 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) is diluted with 3-7pts. of a linear or cyclic alkyl ether solvent (e.g. diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, etc.). Equimolar or small excess amount of phosgene gas or a solution containing phosgene generated from a phosgene generation agent is introduced into the above diluted mixture at -5-+25 deg.C and made to react with each other to obtain a chloroformate having methacryl group at a terminal. USE:A raw material for polymer.
