An apparatus for setting empty containers upright and lining them up in an upright position with the filling opening at the top has a vessel which receives the empty containers in an unordered pile and the bottom of which is covered by a driven turntable which has a row of openings approximately in its edge region. The bottom has at least one opening with which in each case one opening is to be brought into alignment for an empty container to drop through. Located under the opening are four chutes which run past and are directed downwards. The four chutes are divided into an upper deflection section, which transfers the dropping empty containers into a radial position with respect to the axis of rotation, and a lower setting-down position which delivers the empty containers in an upright position. Arranged in the transfer region from the deflection section into the setting-down section is a second turntable having openings aligned radially with respect to the axis of rotation. An enforced alignment of the empty containers takes place in the plane of the second turntable such that the empty containers always drop into the setting-down section with the filling opening at the top.
