PURPOSE:To obtain a fiber having excellent hygroscopicity or water-absorption as well as sufficiently high strength, by carrying out wet spinning of a mixed aqueous solution of a crystalline polymer having hydrophilic group and an amorphous polymer having high hydrophilic property and insolubilizing the spun fiber by thermal treatment. CONSTITUTION:The spinning dope of the present process is a mixed aqueous solution of (A) a hydrophilic crystalline polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol, vinyl alcohol-ethylene copolymer, etc., having an average polymerization degree of 500-2,400 (preferably 1,700-2,400) and a saponification degree of 90-100% (preferably 98-100%) and (B) an amorphous polymer having strong hydrophilic property, e.g. polyvinyl pyrrolidone having a viscosity-average molecular weight of 1.5X10<4>-14X10<5>. The spinning dope is extruded into a coagulation liquid and the spun fiber is insolubilized by heat-treatment. A fiber having a water- absorption of >=2% can be produced by this process. |
