The apparatus according to the invention, for comminuting glass bottles intended for a bottle bank, comprises a tube (10) which is installed horizontally in a bottle bank. The front end tube opening (10b) is accessible from outside, while the rear end opening is closed. Formed at the bottom of the tube are openings (10a) through which the fragments of the glass bottles can fall. By means of a hand-actuated lifting mechanism, a bar (12b), which is held above the tube and on which there is fastened a plurality of striking bolts (15) which project radially into the tube, is raised up counter to the pressure of springs (14) to such an extent that the striking bolts unblock the interior of the tube. The spring forces are released by means of a hand-actuated trigger mechanism, so that the striking bolts move abruptly into the lower region of the tube interior and thus shatter the glass bottles, whose fragments then fall into the bottle bank. <IMAGE>
