To tellurite optical glass comprising TeO2, high valence components are added and may be a combination of La2O3, at least one of B2O3 and GeO2, and at least one of Ta2O5 and Nb2O5. The high valence components may include Y2O3, Gd2O3, and Yb2O3. Amounts of TeO2 and La2O3 are restricted to ranges between 10% and 80% and between 5% and 35%, respectively. A sum of B2O3 and GeO2 must fall within a range between 1% and 30%, with an amount of GeO2 restricted between 0% and 22%. A total of La2O3, Y2O3, Gd2O3, and Yb2O3 must be between 5% and 50%. A sum of Ta2O5 and Nb2O5 should range from 1% to 26%, with individual amounts of Ta2O5 and Nb2O5 kept between 0% and 20% and between 0% and 26%, respectively.
