A copolymer of (a) more than 50% by weight ethylene with (b) an ester of a C3-C12 alkene carboxylic acid with a C3-C8 sec. and/or C4-C8 tert. alcohol, is cleaved to convert ester groups to carboxylic acid groups by suspending the copolymer, in the form of particles having a size of 0.1 to 8 mm, in a ketone, alcohol or ester at 40 to 75 DEG C and in the presence of an acid catalyst.
