PURPOSE:To obtain alkylphenols useful as an antioxidant or other raw material for chemicals in one step and high yield, by reacting phenols with aldehydes and hydrogen in the presence of a tert-amine and a hydrogenation catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula III can be produced from a phenolic compound of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H, alkyl or alkoxy), an aldehyde of formula II (R<3> is H or alkyl) and hydrogen, in one step and high yield, advantageously on an industrial scale, by reacting the phenolic compound with the aldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of a tertiary amine (e.g. trimethylamine, triethylamine, tripropylamine, tributylamine, triamylamine, tribenzylamine and/or triphenylamine, etc.) and a hydrogenation catalyst (e.g. palladium, rhodium, osmium, iridium or copper-chromium catalyst, etc., preferably a palladium catalyst). |
