PURPOSE:To cause a ferroelectric liquid crystal element to have an excellent displaying characteristic, by making charged substances existing in a liquid crystal layer unevenly distributed to the vicinity of the surface of a base plate. CONSTITUTION:Charged substances of plus ions, minus ions, etc., existing in a liquid crystal layer 18 are unevenly distributed to the vicinity of the surfaces of base plates 11. When the charged substances existing in the layer 18 are unevenly distributed in such way, existence of liquid crystal molecules 16 is stabilized even if the molecules 16 have intramolecular dipoles, since their spontaneous polarization occurs in the direction toward the bottom-side base plate from the top-side base plate. On the other hand, arrangement of liquid crystal molecules 17 is extremely electrically unstable, since their intramolecular dipoles are in the direction opposite to those of the molecules 16. Therefore, stable states and unstable states of the liquid crystal molecules are constantly produced and, on the contrary, fluctuation and change with lapse of time of the liquid crystal molecules in a cell can be eliminated. As a result, the displaying characteristic of this ferroelectric liquid crystal element as a liquid crystal display element is extremely improved. |
