PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an antioxidant, etc., in high yield and in high purity, by debutylating 2,6-ditertiary butyl-4-methylphenol by the use of a specific amount of a heteropoly acid as a catalyst at a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:2,6-Ditertiary butyl-4-methylphenol is debutylated in the presence of 0.01-0.5wt% preferably 0.01-0.25wt% based on the compound of a heteropoly acid catalyst at 160-280 deg.C, preferably 160-250 deg.C for 0.5-4hr at normal pressure, under pressure or under reduced pressure to give the aimed compound. Tungstosilicic acid, tungstophosphoric acid, molybdophosphoric acid, etc., are preferably used as the heteropoly acid. A small amount of the heteropoly acid is used, the heteropoly acid which is precipitated after the reaction can be taken out and reused and the cost of the heteropoly acid can be reduced. |
