<FORM:1064900/C2/1> <FORM:1064900/C2/2> Novel compounds of formula I where Ar is phenyl or 2-thienyl, R is C1- 4 alkyl and X is di(C1- 4 alkyl)amino or piperidino are prepared by reacting a compound of Formula II in liquid NH3 with an alkali metal amide to give the alkali metal derivative of II and reacting this, again in liquid NH3 with Hal-CH2-CH2-X or a salt thereof, and isolating the resulting base or salt while maintaining a pH of at least 4. The base may be converted into non-toxic acid addition salts or alkyl ammonium halides. Compounds of Formula II, also said to be novel, in which R is Me or Et are prepared by etherification of the corresponding secondary carbinol in acid medium. The above compounds of Formula I are used in cough medicines, e.g. in tablets, dragees or syrups.
