PURPOSE:To automatically detect a document size on the surface of a platen in the case of executing the copying by a manual operation, by placing a sensor for detecting the size of the document placed on the surface of the platen, when a platen cover has been closed. CONSTITUTION:After copying has been ended, an endless belt of an automatic document feeding device 23 turns its reference surface 11 to a platen 17 surface side and stops. As a result, detecting windows 12, 13 of an endless carrying belt and an optical sensor 18 of a supporting member are always opposed. In this state, when a platen cover is closed, the sensor 18 operates and a light beam is radiated to the platen surface side through the windows 12, 13 from a light emitting element, and its reflected light is detected by a light receiving element. Also, by the minimum of its reflected light quantity document size of a document 8 is detected automatically, and a copying paper being suitable for the document 8 is supplied to a photosensitive drum. Accordingly, even in the case of executing the copying by a manual operation, the operability is improved.
