The operating and display convenience of programme controllers, e.g. in washing machines, is to be enhanced by the following characteristics: setting to the desired programme starts is to be easy and convenient; the programme sequence is to be displayed; the programme selection is to be maintained and displayed during the sequence; it is to be possible for the required time remaining up to the end of the programme to be displayed; the washing machine is to be protected in the case of faulty settings. According to the invention, means are provided which maintain the position of the programme preselection disc after setting and during the sequence of the programme and simultaneously display the position of the programme cam discs on the actuation side. In this case, possibilities are specified, which provide for the programme sequence and the programme preselection to be displayed on an inner or outer display ring respectively. The programme controller is preferably provided for household washing machines and dish-washing machines.
