PURPOSE:To lengthen the charge-discharge cycle life by having a metal oxide positive electrode, a negative electrode made of hydrogen-storing alloy or hydride, a separator, and an alkaline electrolyte, and arranging an oxygen gas absorbing layer comprising expanded graphite and/or amorphous carbon and a binder on the surface of the negative electrode. CONSTITUTION:A battery consists of a metal oxide positive electrode, a negative electrode made of hydrogen-storing alloy or hydride, a separator, and an alkaline electrolyte, and an oxygen gas absorbing layer comprising expanded graphite and/or amorphous carbon and a binder is arranged on the surface of the negative electrode. The oxygen gas absorbing layer has good conductivity by expanded graphite powder, oxygen gas absorbing capability on the negative electrode by amorphous carbon powder having large specific surface area, and oxidation retarding capability by both graphite powder and carbon powder having good corrosion resistance. The oxygen gas absorbing layer is porous, and has good conductivity and high oxidation resistance. The safety is increased by retarding an increase in internal pressure of a battery, and the high rate discharge performance and charge-discharge cycle life can be improved. |
