PURPOSE:To enter a clear image with high contrast and to accurately collate a finger print by deciding the validity/invalidity of contrast of a finger print image based on a density histogram. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is provided with an optical device 2 making a light bundle from a light source 1 incident upon a face to be touched with a finger at a prescribed angle, a converter 3 for converting optical information from the optical device 2 into an electric signal to obtain the rugged pattern of a finger print as an image, a decision display means 7 for deciding the existence of contrast of the finger print image obtained by the converter 3 and informing the decided result to an inspected person, and a processor 6 for entering the finger print image decided at the existence of contract by the device 7 and collating the finger print and the device 7 is constituted so as to decide the existence of contract of the finger print image on the basis of the shape of the density histogram of the finger print image. Consequently, a finger print can be accurately collated.
