1,067,008. Hinges. ATWOOD VACUUM MACHINE CO. Sept. 9, 1965 [Nov. 16, 1964], No. 28045/65. Heading E2F. To hold a car door in an open position, indicated by arc 37 as opposed to the fully open position of arc 38, a hinge member 10 attached thereto and carrying a serrated roller 25 on an upper flange 21 is swung about a pintle 11, the roller striking in the latter part of its motion the downwardly depending arm 26 of an S-shaped torsion bar 19, Fig. 2 (not shown) affixed to a hinged member 9 attached to the door post. The roller deflects the arm 26 and engages one of its peripheral recesses therewith, a spring washer 24 then holding the roller against any further movement so that the two parts lock and mesh perfectly on the return stroke, a slot 34 in a flange 18 affording lateral support to the arm 26. In a modification, Figs. 4-8 (not shown), two spaced rollers provide for an intermediate hold-open position with limited free movement therebetween, while in Fig. 9 (not shown) the rollers are close together to give a hold-open position nearer the fully open position without any free movement. In Figs. 7-9 the torsion bar is of C-shape. In a final modification opening of the hinge is limited by a hook which engages a fixed portion of the torsion bar. The door in the fully open position is limited against further movement when the arm 15 of member 9 engages a stop plate 35 on the arm of member 10. |
