Dicarbinols Ar(CR2OH)2, where Ar is aryl (possibly alkyl-substituted) and R is alkyl, are made by oxidizing Ar(CHR2)2 with O2, reducing the hydroperoxides so formed, crystallizing out the desired dicarbinol at a lower temperature and returning the residual mixture to the oxidation stage, hydrocarbon starting material having been added in the reduction or crystallization stage. The production of m-C6H4(CMe2OH)2 is exemplified.
