An activated magnesium and halogen-containing complex (see Division B1) is used as a catalyst for the alkylation of halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons such as phenyl chloride. Specification 955,806 is referred to.ALSO:An activated magnesium and halogen-containing complex-used as a catalyst for the polymerization of aliphatic or aromatic olefins is prepared by a process in which an organomagnesium compound of formulae R2Mg, RMgHal or R3Mg2Hal or intermediate formulae is reacted with a halide or halogen e.g. benzyl, butyl, t-butyl and dodecyl chlorides, CBr4, CCl4, HBr, HCl, Br2, Cl2 or TiCl4. In the general formulae, R is alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkaryl and Hal if halogen, preferably Cl. The said complex is one which when added to or prepared in 2 moles toluene+1 mole t-butyl chloride in not more than 5 equivalents % based on t-butyl chloride, leads at 30 DEG C. to the evolution of at least 0.75 moles HCl within 1 hour. Specified monomers are ethylene, propylene, butylenes, hexene-1, decene-1, octadecene-1 and styrene. The examples describe the polymerization of diisobutylene and isoprene. Specification 955,806 is referred to.ALSO:Aromatic hydrocarbons are alkylated, aliphatic or aromatic olefins are polymerized and alkylbenzenes isomerized, using as catalyst an activated magnesium and halogen-containing complex (see Division B1). Specified compounds which may be alkylated are benzene, toluene, xylenes, naphthalene, anthracene; specified monomers are ethylene, propylene, butylene, hexene-1, decene-1, octadecene-1 and styrene. The examples describe the butylation and propylation of toluene and the polymerization of diisobutylene and isoprene.
