In a method of impregnating continuous fibrous webs, for example of glass fibres, with liquid polyester or other resins between substantially impermeable foils which are removed after pressing and curing the webs, strips of flexible absorbent material such as creped paper, cotton, wadding or hemp cords, or adhesive strips, are introduced between the edges of the foils to seal them prior to the pressing step. As shown, an impregnated web 1 is pressed between rollers 5 after enclosure between foils 2, 2<SP>1</SP> of regenerated cellulose, and strips 3<SP>1</SP> of creped paper are fed from reels 3 between the edges of the foils through slots in guides 6 which are shaped to collect excess resin escaping during pressing and are laterally adjustable to the width of the webs under treatment. Alternatively the strips 3<SP>1</SP> may be fed through rings whereby they are shaped to arcuate section and subsequently folded longitudinally by the rollers 5 and inserted between the foils. The guides 6 are then used for containing excess resin only.</p> |
