PURPOSE:To obtain the titled stress producing optical fiber having small loss, superior polarization retentivity and transmission characteristics in the form of a long-sized fiber as required at a low cost by forming openings for stress producing parts in a glass base material having an optical transmission part, filling plural glass rods into the openings, melt-bonding the rods and drawing the base material. CONSTITUTION:A glass base material 5 having a support part 4 of SiO2 glass around an optical transmission part 3 consisting of a core part 1 of GeO2-SiO2 glass and a cladding part 2 of SiO2 glass is produced by VAD and openings 6 for stress producing parts 8 are mechanically formed on both sides of the transmission part 3 in the base material 5. Rods 7 of GeO2-F-B2O3-SiO2 glass are filled into the openings 6 so that the compsn. is varied in the radial direction of the base material 5 as required. The rods 7 are then melt-bonded and integrated in the openings 6 by heating to about 1,400 deg.C to form stress producing parts 8 and the base material 5 is drawn. |
