PURPOSE:To realize uniform orientation for an SmC phase also, to maintain bistable condition also in a stage of impression of no electric voltage, and to attain a great effective contrast by subjecting a liquid crystal to orientation treatment by exciting elastic wave propagated through a ferroelectic liquid crystal layer. CONSTITUTION:Aq. soln. is spin-coated on two glass substrates provided with ITO electrodes on the surface, and the soln. is dried. The substrates are then bonded each other interposing beads spacers to prepare thus a liquid crystal cell. An injection port of the liquid crystal cell held at 90 deg.C is allowed to contact under reduced pressure with the ferroelectric liquid crystal held also at 90 deg.C in a liquid crystal sink, thus the ferroelectric liquid crystal is injected into the liquid crystal cell under reduced pressure. After sealing the injection port, a foot end of an obtd. ferroelectric liquid crystal display element 11 is allowed to contact with a lead zirconate titanate vibrator 14 provided in silicone oil 13 in a thermostat 12 held at 65 deg.C, and the element is excited with 2MHz frequency. Thereafter, the element 11 is taken out of the thermostat 12. The element 11 has a satisfactory good effective contrast under a cross Nicol. |
