PURPOSE:To easily set the proper clearance between the inner peripheral surface of a cylinder by forming a covering layer having a hardess gradient in which the hardness lowers as separated from the outer peripheral surface, onto the outer peripheral surface of a piston basic body. CONSTITUTION:A covering layer 18 consisting of a lower layer 22 having an uneven surface 20 and an upper layer 26 which is made of epoxy resin 24 and has a hardness smaller than that of the lower layer 22 is installed through metallizing onto a piston model 2 so that the hardness is gradually lowered as separated from the outer peripheral surface 4 of a piston basic body 6. The piston model 2 is incorporated into an internal combustion engine and operated for a prescribed time, and a prescribed shape obtained after abrasion is formed into a piston form fitted onto the internal combustion engine. Therefore, the clearance between the inner peripheral surface of the cylinder of the internal combustion engine can be properly set, and the clearance can be easily set.
