APPARATUS FOR CANCELLING PERIODIC CARRIER PHASE JITTERS

A jitter canceller for carrier phase control associated with a receiver of a data transmission system for transmitting data over telephone lines is disclosed. The jitter canceller includes circuitry which detects carrier phases of complex baseband signal which carrier phases are stored. A phase predictor responsive to the detected carrier phases produces a predicted carrier phase. This predicted carrier phase is used as a basis for compensating for carrier phase deviation of a complex baseband signal. An error detector detects any error associated with data discriminated from the complex baseband signal and this error is minimized by controlling the phase predictor. The invention accomplishes considerable jitter suppression capability without sacrificing the noise suppression capability of a conventional phase locked loop.
