In order to be able to check the wear of the brake linings with an electrical signal even in the case of a potential-free brake disc (BS), inductive sensors in the form of displacement sensors (WA) are mounted on the brake caliper (BZ) of the disc brake. They emit a measurement signal proportional to the wear at least towards the end of the useful life of the brake linings. When this test interval is reached, the expected life of the brake linings in kilometres is calculated from the kilometres travelled. This extrapolation is repeated at regular intervals. If two displacement sensors (WA) are used for each jaw of the brake caliper (BZ), uneven wear of the brake linings can be detected by comparison of the measurement signals.
