What is described is a separator for successively grasping threads (14) held in a string (28), the said separator having a frame (10) with a jaw-like orifice (12) and two needles (16, 18) which have a hook for grasping the threads (14) and which are guided in the frame (10) and can be displaced by a driving element in such a way that the hook engages on the foremost thread (14) of the string (28) in the jaw-like orifice (12). Each needle (16, 18) has at least one hook (20, 22; 24, 26), the hook (20 or 22) of one needle (16) pointing in the opposite direction to the hook (26 or 24) of the other needle (18). The needles (16, 18) can be displaced by their driving elements for the purpose of executing a tensioning stroke, so that the hooks (20 and 26 or 22 and 24), co-operating, positively grasp the foremost thread (14) of the string. <IMAGE>
