A positioning device (40) for use in surgical interventions is fastened on a support rod (24) which is suspended from an operating table and essentially rigidly connected thereto. The positioning device (40) comprises a coupling which consists of a ball (58) and circular jaws and in which clamping blocks (62, 64) which have upper and lower clamping rings (84, 82) and are spaced apart are in clamping engagement with the ball (58) due to the tension force of a plurality of compression springs. An eccentric (122) can be operated by a lever (128) provided with a foot pedal (130) in order to overcome the pretension of the clamping blocks (62, 64), as a result of which the position of the support arm (56) fastened on one end of the ball (58) can be precisely adjusted over a wide angular range. <IMAGE>
