Title compds. (I)[R1=H, lower alkyl, alkenyl, phenylmethyl; R2=H, lower alkyl; R3=H, lower alkoxy, halo, cyano, nitro, etc.; R4, R5=H, substituted R3 or R4, etc. , useful as a curing agent for diabetes, were prepd.. Thus, a mixt. contg. 14.21g 1-bromo-5(1-methylethenyl)- naphthalene in 140ml diethy ether and ethyl magnesium bromide in 30ml diethyl ether was refluxed, treated with solid CO2, dissolved in diethyl ether, washed with 2N-H2SO4 and 10% NaHCO3 and acidified with 6N-HCl to give 9.7g 5-(1-methylethenyl)-1-naphthalene carboxylic acid.
