PURPOSE: To facilitate chemical sensitization and spectral sensitization of particles and to enhance the sensitivity and image quality of a photographic element by incorporating silver bromoiodide particles of a specified shape. CONSTITUTION: This photosensitive emulsion consists of a dispersive medium such as gelatin (deriv.) and silver halide particles, and >=10% of the particles are silver bromoiodide particles (A) each having a boundary made of a practically concave principal face. Each of the particles A has >=0.6μm diameter and the 1/2 thickness at the deepest point of the concave part is <80% of that at the edge part. The thickness of the edge part is preferably 0.15 to <0.4μm and the average aspect ratio of the particles A is preferably 2:1 to <10:1. The particles A have been preferably subjected to chemical sensitization with a noble metal, etc., and spectral sensitization with a sensitizing dye.
