PURPOSE: To simplify the manufacture of a camshaft securely combining cams and bearing rings by loosely engaging the cams and bearing rings having a plurality of axial grooves spaced circumferentially on the inner surfaces thereof loosely on the outer periphery of a pipe of a camshaft body and applying diameter expanding treatment to the pipe. CONSTITUTION: During the manufacture of a camshaft by engaging a plurality of cams 10, 12 and bearing rings 14 on a pipe 13, the inner diameter of each of the cams 10, 12 and the bearing ring 14 is made to be slightly larger than the outer diameter of the pipe 13. A plurality of axial grooves 22, 24, 26 spaced circumferentially are formed on the inner surfaces of each of the cams 10, 12 and the bearing ring 14 respectively. After the cams 10, 12 and the bearing ring 14 are engaged on the outer periphery of the pipe 13, an expanding tool 36 is inserted into the pipe 13. The diameter of the pipe 13 is expanded by the axial movement of the tool. The outer periphery of the pipe is compressed to the inner periphery of cams 10, 12 and the bearing ring 14, and a portion of the material of the pipe 13 penetrates into the grooves 22, 24, 26 due to projections 28 of the tool 36 so that secured combining can be obtained. |
