PURPOSE:To easily obtain indole useful as a raw material for perfumery, polymer stabilizer, etc., in high selectivity, by using quinoline having immature application field and reacting with steam, etc., in the presence of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Quinoline which is a basic component of by-product tar of coke oven is used as a raw material and is made to react with steam and/or hydrogen or their gaseous mixture in the presence of a catalyst preferably containing one or more metals selected from Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt and Ir, especially Rh and Pd together with a carrier for the catalyst, at 250-450 deg.C under a reaction pressure of <=50kg/cm<2>. The reaction can be carried out by using a fixed catalyst-bed flow-reaction apparatus. Preferably, the gaseous phase is diluted with H, N, He, etc., to prevent the dilution or deterioration of the catalyst. |
