The invention relates to a tool (1) for connecting cable cores (35) to insulation-piercing contacts (7). In order to produce a tool (1) for connecting cable cores (35) in which the cable end is not stripped until the cable core (35) is pressed into the contact slot (38), on the ram (2) there is arranged a latching lock (3) which locks the longitudinal movement of the ram (2) with respect to the housing (12). On the ram head (5) there is arranged a sensor (6), which is connected to the latching lock (3) and releases the latching lock (3) on operation by means of the insulation-piercing contact (7) or a component (8) surrounding the said contact (7).
