A method for exciting a europium-activated barium-strontium-magnesium-fluorohalide phosphor is described, in which the phosphor is exposed to high-energy radiation, in order to produce a phosphor with stored energy, and the resulting excited phosphor is exposed to radiation at wavelengths from about 565 to about 890 nm, in order to produce a phosphor which is capable of emitting the major part of the stored energy in the form of luminescence.
