To inhibit scale formation and dissolve any existing scale in a conduit carrying a stream of hot liq. water with dissolved salts, there is added to the water a treating agent contg. a N-contg. cation able to flash to a gas at high temp.; and at least part of the water is then flashed to steam. The treating agent may be an ammonium salt of an inorganic acid (including ammonium halides) or of mono-, di- or trichloracetic, formic, acetic, citric, tartaric, gallic, glyoxylic or benzoic acids, or of alpha-hydroxy organic acids; or a quaternary ammonium salt of an inorganic or organic acid; an amine salt of an inorganic acid (including hydrochlorides) or of organic acids; or amides RCONR1R2, where R, R1, R2 = 1-8C alkyl, and R may also be H. |
