PURPOSE:To stabilize the cell performance by arranging fuel and oxidizer electrodes across an electrolyte layer and providing a means supplying water according to the moisture evaporated from the oxidizing electrode. CONSTITUTION:A fuel electrode 1 is constituted of an electrode substrate 12 and a catalyst layer 11 stuck on the electrolyte layer 3 side of the substrate 12, an oxidizer electrode 2 is constituted of an electrode substrate 22 and a catalyst layer 21 stuck on the electrode layer 3 side of the substrate 22. The electrolyte layer 3 is constituted of a positive ion exchange membrane 31 arranged on the fuel electrode 1 side and a water-holding layer 32 arranged on the oxidizer electrode 2 side. The water-holding layer 32 is impregnated with dilute sulfuric acid. The water permeation quantity of the positive ion exchange membrane 31 is set to 0.05mm/cm<2>.min. When the thickness of the water-holding layer 32 is set to 0.25mm, the water retention quantity of about 20mg/cm<2> can be secured. The catalyst layer 21 is impregnated with an activator 9. The cell performance can be stabilized against aging changes. |
