The present invention is concerned with new polymers comprising about 7 to about 22 percent by weight vinyl acetate units, about 15 to about 35 percent by weight vinyl alcohol units about 35 to about 57 percent by weight vinyl acetal units, and about 7 to about 23 percent by weight of vinyl hemiacetal units. These new polymers which differ from known polymers by the specific ranges of the acetate, alcohol and acetal units in combination with a hemiacetal content of about 7 to about 23 percent by weight show better solubilities in formaldehyde, and can be prepared with a higher degree of reproducibility than the prior art polymers.
