PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for synthetic raw material of azo dye under a mild reaction condition in a short time without using any expensive raw material and requiring a nonaqueous system and hydrolysis by reacting an N-substituted aniline with an organic chloride in the presence of a specific deoxidizer and a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An N-substituted aniline shown by formula I (R is H, Cl, NO2, 1-6C alkyl or alkenyl; R<1> is 1-4C alkylene; R<2> is H or 1-6C alkyl) is reacted with an organic chloride (e.g., methyl chloride or ethylene chlorohydrin) shown by formula II (R<3> is organic substituent group) by using an aqueous solution of phosphate as a deoxidizer in the presence of an iodinated compound as a catalyst at 60-120 deg.C, preferably 90-110 deg.C under <=5Kg/cm<2>G, preferably 2-4Kg/ cm<2>G reaction pressure to give a compound shown by formula III. The aqueous solution of phosphate is obtained from phosphoric acid and an alkali compound and a concentration thereof is preferably 40-60%. |
