PRODUCTION OF POLARIZATION MAINTAINING OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To easily and inexpensively obtain the above optical fiber with good accuracy by drawing a preform obtd. by inserting a bundle of specific glass rods into a hollow glass cylinder and melting and integrating the entire part. CONSTITUTION:A circular columnar quartz rod 11 for a core contg. GeO2 and a hollow glass cylinder 12 for a side pit contg. B2O3, etc., are respectively cut to a 1/4 circle to obtain a sectorial rod 13 for the core and a sectorial rod 14 for the side pit. These sectorial rods 13, 14 are then alternately assembled radially to obtain the assembly (bundle) of the sectorial rods having a circular cylindrical shape. This bundle is inserted into the hollow glass cylinder 15 made of pure quartz to constitute a clad and is integrated by melting and integrating to obtain the preform which is a circular cylindrical body. The stage of inserting this preform again into the hollow glass cylinder 15 and integrating the same by melting is repeated several times and the preform is drawn, by which the polarization maintaining optical fiber is produced.
