PURPOSE:To provide the title composition ensured to obtain at relatively low temperatures high-density sintered compacts causing no deterioration in their physical properties, comprising crystalline mullite and an alkaline earth metal oxide. CONSTITUTION:Crystalline mullite (with the molar ratio Al2O3/SiO2=1.37-1.76) is incorporated with <=3wt.% of an alkaline earth metal oxide pref. through the sol-gel process to obtain the objective mullite composition in the form of powder 0.5-5mum in means granular size. When this composition is calcined at 1600 deg.C for 3hr, a sintered compact with a density falling at or above 98% of its theoretical density can be obtained, which is promising for IC substrates, ceramics for high-temperature materials, etc. |
