The compressor has an oil sump and a crankshaft rotatable about an axis and defining a centrifugal oil pump. An oil pickup tube extends into the oil sump and secured to the crankshaft coaxial with the axis and rotatable with the crankshaft about the axis as a unit. An impeller is axially asymmetrically mounted on the pickup tube within the oil sump. Rotation of the crankshaft, the oil pickup tube and the impeller as a unit causes the production of froth and the pumping of oil while preventing the formation of a stable vortex.
