PURPOSE:To rapidly and selectively obtain an aromatic aldehyde or ketone in high yield by oxidizing aromatic alcohols with a water-soluble oxidizing agent, etc., in water solvent under mild conditions using cyclodextrin as a phase- transfer agent. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic alcohols, such as benzyl alcohol, expressed by formula I (A is benzene or furan nucleus; R<1> is alkyl, OH, alkoxy, formyl or halogen; R<2> is H or alkyl; m is 1<=m<=6; n is 0<=n<=5) are oxidized in the presence of a water-soluble oxidizing agent, such as an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite, and/or an oxidation catalyst, such as platinum-based catalyst, coexisting with alpha-, beta- and gamma-type cyclodextrin as a phase-transfer agent, preferably at 0-100 deg.C to afford the objective compound expressed by formula II. The amount of the cyclodextrin used is 0.1-100mol% based on the compounds expressed by formula I. The cyclodextrin employed for the reaction is recovered and then reused for the reaction.
