PURPOSE:To obtain the color filter with which the lower cost at the time of mass production is regarded important by forming two over coat layers consisting of two kinds of materials which are different in initial cost on a colored layer and polishing away the inexpensive upper layer while allowing the costly lower over coat layer to remain. CONSTITUTION:The two over coat layer 1, 2 consisting of two kinds of the materials which are different in the initial cost are formed on the colored layer 102 and the inexpensive upper over coat layer 2 is polished away while the costly lower over coat layer 1 in contact with the colored layer 102 is allowed to remain. The upper over coat layer 2 is in short a dummy layer in order to assure the film thickness necessary for the polishing and the material cost is greatly saved if the over coat material having desired performances by a as much as the film thickness of the over coat layer to be finally obtd. after the polishing is applied.
