PURPOSE:To efficiently, continuously obtain the title compound in high yield with good reproducibility by esterification, under specified conditions, between a liquid organic acid and a gaseous lower monoalcohol in a vertical reaction column while allowing them to flow down through a packed bed consisting of a solid acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:(A) An organic acid such as adipic aid in a liquid state and (B) a lower monoalcohol such as methanol in a gaseous state are fed, through the upper part of a vertical reaction column packed with a solid acid catalyst such as SiO2, and allowed to flow down. Concurrently with this, both the components are put to esterification at 150-350 deg.C under a pressure higher than 1.5atm, but lower than the vapor pressure of the component B to be used at the above reaction temperature, thus continuously obtaining, through the lower part of the reaction column, the objective compound useful as an organic solvent, plasticizer, raw material for perfumes, etc. Any special separation process for the solid acid catalyst is unnecessary, and the purification of the product can be very easily made, thus being industrially advantageous. |
