发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY ELEMENT
摘要 PURPOSE:To realize the ECB type liquid crystal display element which has an excellent contrast even in high-time-division driving and excellent in field angle characteristics by providing a birefringent layer which has a retardation value matching the retardation of a liquid crystal layer within a 0.1mum range between a liquid crystal layer and a polarizer. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal cell where the liquid crystal layer 30 made of a liquid crystal compound with positive dielectric anisotropy is sandwiched between a couple of substrates 13 and 23 equipped with electrodes 12 and 22 has a couple of polarizers 14 and 24. At least one of both the polarizers 14 and 24 of the liquid crystal layer 30 is provided with one birefringent layer 32 to make the maximum in-plane refractive index direction of the birefringent layer 32 and the liquid crystal molecule orientation direction of the liquid crystal layer 30 cross each other almost at right angles. Further, the difference between the product of the difference between the maximum in-plane refractive index (n)x and minimum in-plane refractive index ny of the birefringent layer 32 and the retardation of the liquid crystal layer 30 is set to 0.1mum, and the refractive perpendicular to index nz perpendicular to the birefringent layer plane is nearly equalized to the maximum in-plane refractive index nx.
