<p>PURPOSE:To smelt an ingot of a large or medium diameter or a deformed ingot with an electrode of a small diameter by making the electrode freely rotatable in the peripheral direction of a melting furnace. CONSTITUTION:Steel as an electrode 2 is put in a water-cooled copper crucible 1, immersed in slag 3 and electrically melted. During this melting, the electrode 2 is rotated in the peripheral direction of the melting furnace with a driving mechanism 6. The ratio (d/D) of the diameter (d) of the electrode 2 to the inside diameter D of the crucible 1 (the diameter of the resulting steel ingot) can be changed from about 0.1 to about 0.5. Electric power used can be reduced to about 3/10-8/10 of the conventional electric power and this small power ESR can be utilized as a backup for the conventional furnace with an electrode of a large diameter.</p> |
