The sections of railway lines, and railway line parts, between heat-treated and untreated zones are formed by heating the treated section so that the transfer zone between the two sections runs at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the rail and its riding edge, into the untreated rail zone, as seen in plan from the riding surface. In changing the shape of the rail, the heat is applied at the end at an angle, using a gas burner or in induction coil, or a furnace with an angled opening. While the rail is being heated, a covering of heat-resistant material such as asbestos is passed over the rail to define the angled transfer zone between the heated and non-heated sections of the rail. The untreated section of the rail is heated as a short heat build-up zone at a temp. below the decarburistaion temp. of the rail, such as 400-500 deg.C. ADVANTAGE - The technique prevents the development of projections and weakness in the rail, and the railway wheel does not rest on the whole transfer zone.
