PURPOSE:To accurately measure alpha radioactivity by introducing sulfur hexafluoride into a container having an alpha radioactive substance received therein and measuring the quantity of alpha radioactivity in the container from the number of neutrons discharged by the (alpha, n) reaction of sulfur hexafluoride. CONSTITUTION:After an object to be measured is received in a container 21, the neutron generated by the spontaneous fission of alpha radioactivity is detected as a background. The air replaced with SF6 gas in the container 21 and a part of the SF6 gas are guided to an SP6 recovery tube 23 to reach a recovered gas purifying device 30. When the container 21 is filled with the SF6 gas, the number of neutrons detected by a neutron detector increases mark edly. Since the number of neutrons generated by (alpha, n) reaction is proportional to the intensity of alpha radioactivity, the intensity of alpha radioactivity can be accurately known on the basis of this relation.
